Want to be a choreographer? Know the qualities you should have

January 23, 2023

“Every day brings a chance to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance.”

- Oprah Winfrey

Gone are those days when a career only meant being a doctor, engineer, banker or teacher. Times have changed and so is the thought process of people and society. With advancements in technology and a shift toward the gig economy, there are now several routes to a satisfying career.

If you put dance over love and looking to become a Choreographer, Check to see whether you have these characteristics and talents.

  • Creativity. Dancers must be artistic and creative in order to express themselves via movement. To make fresh and intriguing dance routines, choreographers also need to be creative and have unique ideas.

  • A Knowledge of Aesthetics - Choreography is what pulls a dancing troupe together. It's critical to have an eye for how the dancers appear on stage in a Bollywood dance number or a ballroom dance performance. The choreography creates a visual impression, therefore you must have an eye for the aesthetics of the performance and how the dancers move about.

  • Leadership skills. Choreographers must be able to direct a group of dancers to perform the routines that they have created. A choreographer is in charge of their project or dance routine, but they also need to be in charge of the dancers and the people in their team.

  • Interpersonal skills. To be an effective leader, you must understand how to interact with others. A choreographer must be able to communicate effectively with their crew and dancers. To have a successful group dynamic, you must know how to communicate with all kinds of people and get to know them. Networking is essential too since it will help you get clients and grow professionally.

  • Persistence. Dancers devote years to rigorous practice. They must be able to take rejection after an audition and keep practising for future opportunities. Choreographers must continue to research and develop new routines.

  • Physical stamina. Dancers are often physically active for long periods, so they must be able to rehearse for many hours without getting tired.

  • Teaching Skills. A choreographer must also be a skilled instructor who can pass on knowledge to their dancers. They must love the process of demonstrating to their dancers the steps they have created for them.

If you have decided to be a choreographer, group learning is a fantastic way to get started.  It will not hit your pocket much as the cost of the tutor's experience and expertise is shared amongst the students in attendance. While this implies that you will not receive lessons that are totally personalised to you, it might be beneficial for you if you wish to learn many dance forms. After all, dance or choreography aren't learnt overnight, and because you'll be spending a lot of time with your tutor in the long run, you'll want to pick the best for her.
